Walking

The Hotel grounds extend to 140 acres and provide a great variety of walking – from flat, easy walks with magnificent views in all directions to tougher 3 – 4 mile walks through the splendour of Irthing Gorge.

Just 8 miles from the Hotel, Talkin Tarn is also a very pretty setting for walks.

The Hadrian’s Wall Trail runs for 84 miles from the Solway Estuary in the West to Wallsend in the East. It links over 80 short walks and passes within a mile or so of the Hotel. Information about the trail is also available on the Ramblers website.

Stretching the 266 miles from the Peak District National Park all the way to the Scottish Borders, The Pennine Way passes within 2 miles of Gilsland Hall Hotel.

The 23 mile long South Tyne Trail passes through Haltwhistle (5 miles away).

Cycling

The Hadrians Wall Cycleway follows the route of the Wall from coast to coast. (See also the Sustrans website – Hadrians Cycleway is Sustrans route 72)

The Reivers Cycle Route, a 171 miles coast to coast route, passes through Bewcastle – just 7 miles from the Hotel.

The South Tyne Trail (mentioned above for walking) is also a cycling route.

Golf

The Hotel boasts a ‘Pitch and Putt’ area, but, for serious golfers, there are a number of good courses in the area:

Haltwhistle Golf Club (2 ½ miles away)

  • 18 Hole Golf Course
  • 5532 Yards
  • Par 69
  • Two testing Par 5s
  • Five not easy Par 3s

With trees, ditches and well maintained greens you will find this course a truly testing and enjoyable golfing experience.

Brampton Golf Club (8 miles away)

Originally designed by James Braid, the course now measures 6,407 yards off the competition tees and 6,084 yards off the forward tees, with a par of 72 and standard scratch of 71. The course is best described as undulating heathland offering a challenge to all standards of golfer in an idyllic setting. In 1995 Golf World described the course as "The Jewel of Cumbria", and visitors have likened it to a "Mini Gleneagles".

Eden Golf Club and Driving Range (16 miles away)

The Eden Golf Course is a hidden gem situated along the banks of the River Eden with beautiful views of the Lake District and Pennine fells. Tight tree lined fairways and numerous natural water hazards mark this course out as a great test of a golfer's skill. Located just outside Carlisle five minutes from the M6 and an hours drive from the centre of Newcastle this course is a must for any discerning golfer who wishes to step outside their comfort zone.

Bellingham Golf Club (30 miles away)

There is a pleasing mixture of testing par three's, long par fives and some tricky par fours. The overriding memory of Bellingham will be the natural beauty and the unstinting challenge ensuring continued enthusiasm to the very last putt.

Fishing

The Hotel itself sits on the hillside above the River Irthing and has fishing rights for the same – please enquire at Reception.

The Haltwhistle & District Angling Association grants permits for a 6 mile stretch from Bardon Mill to Featherstone (migratory salmon and brown trout).
